Frequently Asked Questions
What defines a "frankenwatch"?
A "frankenwatch" is a timepiece assembled from the parts of several different watches. While it may run, it lacks historical integrity. Forensic identification focuses on ensuring the dial, case, hands, and movement all originate from the correct production batch.
Should I polish my vintage watch case?
As a general rule within the academic horology community, no. Polishing removes metal and alters the original geometry of the case, rounding off sharp chamfers on the lugs. Collectors vastly prefer unpolished cases with original scratches (honest wear) over heavily refinished ones.
How can I tell if a dial has been repainted or "redialed"?
Examine the typography under a 10x loupe. Original printing is sharp, raised, and exact. Redials often have softer, bleeding fonts, misaligned minute tracks, or incorrect logos. A dial that looks perfectly new on a watch from 1950 is highly suspicious.
What is the difference between Radium and Tritium?
Radium was used for luminescence until the early 1960s; it is highly radioactive and degrades to a dark brown over time. Tritium replaced it, offering safer (but still mildly radioactive) luminescence that generally ages to a creamy yellow before ceasing to glow entirely.
What are "Tropical" dials?
A tropical dial is a black dial that has chemically faded to a shade of brown due to UV exposure and manufacturing defects in the lacquer. When naturally occurring, they are highly sought after by collectors.
How often should a vintage movement be serviced?
If the watch is worn regularly, a full strip-down, cleaning, and re-oiling is recommended every 5 to 7 years. Running a dry movement can cause catastrophic wear to the pivots and jewels.
Can I swim with my vintage dive watch?
It is strongly advised not to. Gaskets harden and degrade over time. Even if pressure tested successfully, risking a historical artifact to water damage is unnecessary.
What is an extract from the archives?
Many heritage brands maintain ledgers of their production. For a fee, they can provide a document confirming the date of manufacture and original configuration based on the case and movement serial numbers.
